The ART of mixing science and engineering, that's really what the Beakerhead event is all about, and if you haven't experienced it, we're going to suggest you make an effort to this year! Beakerhead is a 5 day festival that explodes into the streets of Calgary every September, a collection of 'installations' workshops and different programs that teach lessons on different topics throughout Calgary!
Beakerhead Installations
In the past we've seen everything from a giant fire breathing dragon, to a building that had large tentacles that were coming out of it, last year we had an older home near the Saddledome that was outfitted with hundreds of balloons on it, mirroring the Disney and Pixar classic UP! You'll also find other cool things like glowing teeter totters near East Village, or giant bunnies that light up in the Central Memorial Park.
In 2013 two individuals set out on a mission to share their passion for engineering and science and making it fun, a registered charity that has a mandate to advance education globally by means of entertainment and art for all ages, allowing anyone with a sense of imagination or love of science to... GEEK OUT!
Last year we actually went down to the Beakerhead UP installation and met with Maria the creator and BALLOON extraordinaire! @CalgaryParty50 on Instagram
From Wednesday (TODAY) September 18th to Sunday the 22nd of September you'll find a whole host of events that are sure to make for an exciting night out. You can find the entire schedule for the 2019 Beakerhead installation by clicking here. - There are mixture of paid and free events.
Beakerhead recommendations
We recommend you check out the Spectral Illuminations at the central memorial library that's located on 2nd St SW this year, or 20,900 flowers display which is on 8th Ave SE that has 20,900 flowers which represents how many flowers are needed to produce just one teaspoon of honey or take a drive out to Longview and check out the epic polar bear! The biggest event is on Saturday September 21st 'the spectacle' which takes place in Prince's island park, where Jay Ingram one of the founders of Beakerhead was quoted as saying that you will not be able to turn anywhere without encountering something fabulous! You'll find over 20 different installations throughout, including a giant fire breathing dragon (lite brite) along with plenty of great eats as food trucks swarm the area to provide unique eats for visitors taking all the sights in.
Check out a few snapshots we took of the epic beacon aka the UP house from the 2018 Beakerhead event!
Sound off in the comments below! What is your favorite beacon installation for Beakerhead? We'd love to hear what your favorite part about this unique event is, and what stood out to you the most, and / or what you plan on taking in this year as the event is finally upon us this season! Personally we're hoping in a few years this becomes a month long take over in the city, it's just that cool!
