The Equipment
So you’ve booked in your first class, now what? Wondering what tools you need to set yourself up for success in the class and carry you forward throughout your boxing journey? Here is the shortlist for the best boxing equipment we’ve found:
Hand Wraps: Hand wraps are required to participate in most boxing classes. You may bring your own (check out these Unisex Hayabusa wraps, available in a wide range of colours on Amazon) or purchase a set at your nearby studio.
Gloves: Most studios offer rental gloves with each class booking. While investing in great equipment is a huge asset to success, we recommend testing out your rental options to feel out your favourite style. Our current favourite set is a pair we picked up at Rumble West 85th!
Footwear: Runners or indoor gym shoes work great at most fitness based boxing studios. Boxing boots can be a great option for keeping you light on your feet, but any indoor running shoe will work just fine until you’re ready to commit to a full boxing kit! When the time comes for you to upgrade, or if you’re wanting to invest in your boxing journey up front, check out the great selection available online from Classic Fight Shop Calgary.
Water: Having a bottle of water on hand is an absolute must in boxing classes, no matter your skill level. We love a squeeze bottle like this because it makes taking a quick drink easier while you’re in the middle of class with your wraps on.
What to Wear: First things first, make sure you are wearing moisture-wicking athletic materials in a silhouette that is comfortable for you. While tight compression gear is great for yoga and baggy t-shirts are great for the gym, you need room to breathe in the ring without having excess fabric that interferes with your movement and your instructor’s ability to read your form.
Additional Gear to Consider down the road
-
Mouthguards: As you progress, especially if you start sparring, a good mouthguard is essential for protecting your teeth and gums.
-
Headgear: For those interested in full-contact training, investing in quality headgear provides added safety during sparring sessions.
Get in a few practice punches to amp up your confidence before your class or keep your skills on track to your goals in between sessions.
