History of Discovery Ridge


Long before it was developed, Discovery Ridge was once referred to as Jackson’s Valley. It was a secluded valley adjacent to the Sarcee Military Reserve. Development for the community began in the late 1990s. The original plan was to make Discovery Ridge a gated community, but this idea was later dropped. Today, most of Discovery Ridge is open and accessible to the public. There remains one exclusive gated community in Discovery Ridge called Discovery Valley Cove.

Discovery Ridge not only has some of the best mountain views, but it’s home to Griffith Woods Environmental Park. Griffith Woods has over 93 acres of wilderness just waiting to be explored. It just so happens to be the reason people are so drawn to this neighbourhood. The park is full of trails for walking, cycling, rollerblading, running, and horseback riding. Griffith Woods is a sight to behold with White Spruce forests, networks of creeks, and plenty of wildlife to be spotted. For the days when you’re looking to take it easy, Griffith Woods has calming clear creeks that are deep enough to swim in at some spots. Pick a spot, lay a picnic blanket, and spend the day relaxing with a good book. Throughout the park you’ll find a number of benches where you can sit and listen to the many sounds of birds chirping, beavers chomping, and plenty of other natural wildlife noises.

Griffith Woods Park is designated as a protected environment park. It’s a habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna, moose, deer, and a variety of birds. It’s also home to the unique natural spruce and balsam poplar. People report seeing owls, bobcats, and mule deer. When you live in Discovery Ridge, you essentially have Griffith Woods as your backyard. Spending time here is the closest feeling you’ll have to be in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The Elbow River runs through Griffith Woods at the edge of Discovery Ridge. This river flows from the Canadian Rockies to the city of Calgary where it merges into the Bow River. The river is popular among people who hike, canoe, raft, and camp.

What to Do In Discovery Ridge

While Discovery Ridge provides the atmosphere of serene mountain living, it isn’t anywhere close to lacking in the amenities department. The community is within close proximity to popular shopping malls like Signal Hill Centre, Aspen Landing, and Westhills Towne Centre. Here you can spend the day shopping at a wide range of retailers such as Marshalls, Indigo, Marshalls, Winners, Best Buy, Urban Barn, Petland, as well as local boutique shops (Crave Cupcakes) and a variety of restaurants from fast food to fine dining. 

When you’ve tired yourself out enjoying the endless array of Discovery Ridge outdoor activities, it’s time to kick back and relax. Head over to the nearby Cineplex Odeon to catch a movie. For the foodies out there, Discovery Ridge is nearby Indian restaurants, Mexican restaurants, Italian restaurants, Sushi restaurants, steak houses, breakfast spots, coffee shops, and sports bars. Elbow Springs Golf Club borders the outer limits of Discovery Ridge. This three nine-hole course is embedded in the Elbow River Valley. Standing on the course surrounded by incredible landscapes is nothing short of enchanting.

Right in the heart of Discovery Ridge is where you’ll find the quaint Cornerstone Square. In this shopping mall you’ll find New Discovery Fine Wines & Spirits, Cutting Edge Barber Shop, Laque Nail Bar, and Maharajah Discovery Ridge. There’s also a pharmacy, law office, animal hospital, dry cleaner, and a highly popular Montessori day school as well as a health clinic. Discovery Ridge is also getting a donut shop that is set to open in 2023! 

Parents can take their children to unleash some energy at one of the four parks within the community. Playgrounds are located at The Fort, Discovery Hill Playground, and Circle Park. Most of these playgrounds have a baby swing, but are mainly suitable for children 3 years and up. During the winter there are two rinks available for use, a hockey rink and a leisure rink. During spring, summer, and fall there are tennis, mini-tennis, and pickleball courts available for use. For the real tennis enthusiasts out there, Discovery Ridge has its very own Adult Tennis League, the Discovery Ridge Tennis League. Players are invited to sign up whether they want to hit balls casually, join singles or doubles, or play competitively.

Discovery Ridge Community Association & Homeowners Association

The Discovery Ridge Community Association is responsible for managing recreation facilities, taking care of finances, and holding events to bring the community together. The DRCA is very active and is run entirely by volunteers, with activities being funded by donations and memberships. The New Discovery Homeowners Association is responsible for green space maintenance, boulevard/median plantings, winter pathway snow clearing, and winter lights. The NDHA is non- profit and community-run by resident volunteers. A variety of events and activities are hosted for all age groups such as concerts in the park, stampede events, family barbecues, and an annual gala.

Getting Around Discovery Ridge

Discovery Ridge is not only well connected to nature, but it’s also well connected to the city. The community has easy access to Stoney Trail, Glenmore Trail, and Sarcee Trail which make commuting a breeze. Driving from Discovery Ridge to downtown Calgary can easily be done by taking either the Crownchild Trail or the Macleod Trail. The commute takes approximately 20 minutes by car or just over 1 hour by public transportation.
