What Is the Métis Down Payment Assistance Program?

This program supports long-term housing stability for Métis individuals and families across Alberta. It provides a forgivable loan of up to 5% of the purchase price (max $20,000) to be used strictly for your minimum down payment.

Key Points:

  • The loan is forgivable after five years if you follow the rules (live in the home, keep insurance, don’t sell or rent it out).

  • Funding is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • The program is reopening August 5, 2025, and applications must be complete to be considered.

Who Qualifies?

To apply, you must:  

  • Be a Citizen of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government (formerly Métis Nation of Alberta)

  • Have a total household income of $150,000 or less

  • Be buying a primary residence (not a rental or vacation home)

  • Not currently own a home, or have owned one in the past three years

  • Not have previously received assistance from any MCHC Home Programs

  • Qualify for a mortgage pre-approval from a major bank or financial institution

  • Submit your application before entering a purchase agreement

Required Documents Checklist

Here’s what you need to include in your application:

  • Completed and signed application form

  • Two pieces of ID:

    • Applicant: One government-issued photo ID + Métis Citizenship Card

    • Co-applicant (if applicable): Either two government-issued IDs or one photo ID + Métis Citizenship Card

  • Notice of Assessment for all household members over 18

  • Mortgage pre-approval letter from a recognized lender

  • If approved: Residential Real Estate Purchase Contract

How the Program Works (From My Realtor Perspective)

As a realtor and former construction worker, I always look for ways to help clients maximize their buying power. This program, when used properly, can bridge the gap between saving and owning.

Important Conditions:

  • You must sign a funding agreement with MCHC

  • A caveat will be placed on the property by MCHC

  • After five years, the loan is forgiven and the caveat is removed

  • If you sell or move within five years, you repay a prorated amount plus 6% interest

  • Proof of insurance is required

  • Funds are paid directly to the seller's lawyer on closing

Once the program opens:

  1. Download the application from metishousing.ca

  2. Complete and gather all documents

  3. Submit your application:

Note: If you applied before and weren’t accepted, you must reapply with the updated form in 2025.
