What You Need to Know: Métis Down Payment Assistance Program Alberta 2026
Saving for a down payment is often one of the biggest hurdles buyers face on their path to homeownership. That's why I'm excited to share that the Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC) Down Payment Assistance Program is reopening on July 10, 2026.
If you're a Métis Citizen in Alberta, this program could provide up to $20,000 toward your down payment through a forgivable loan, helping make homeownership more accessible and affordable.
If you're thinking about buying a home in the next year, now is the time to start preparing your mortgage pre-approval and gathering the required documents before applications open.

How the Program Works .jpg)
We often work with buyers who have the income and mortgage qualifications to purchase a home but struggle to save enough for the down payment.
Programs like this can help bridge that gap.
A $20,000 contribution can make a meaningful difference, especially for first-time buyers who are balancing rising housing costs, closing costs, moving expenses, and everyday expenses.
One thing I would strongly encourage is getting your mortgage pre-approval completed well before applications open. Funding is limited, and having your financing and documents organized ahead of time can help avoid delays.
Important Conditions:
- You must sign a funding agreement with MCHC
- MCHC will register a caveat on the property
- The funding becomes fully forgiven after five years
- Proof of property insurance is required
- Funds are paid directly to the seller's lawyer
- If you sell the property or move out within five years, you must repay a prorated portion of the funding plus 6% interest
How to Apply
- Download and complete the application form when the program opens.
- Gather all required documents.
- Submit your application by email, mail, or in person.

Stack This Program With Other Incentives
Many buyers can combine this program with other homeownership incentives to maximize their purchasing power.
- First Home Savings Account (FHSA): Contribute up to $8,000 annually while receiving tax deductions.
- Home Buyers' Plan (HBP): Withdraw up to $60,000 from your RRSP tax-free to purchase a home.
- GST New Housing Rebate: Buyers purchasing eligible new construction homes may qualify for a partial or full GST rebate.
Is It Time To Make It Happen?
For many buyers, the down payment is the biggest obstacle to homeownership. Programs like this can help eligible Métis Citizens get into the market sooner while building long-term stability through homeownership.
With funding limited and applications processed on a first-come, first-served basis, preparation is key. Start gathering your identification, Notices of Assessment, and mortgage pre-approval now so you're ready when applications open on July 10, 2026.
