Chinook Centre, commonly known as Chinook Mall, is one of Calgary's largest and most popular shopping destinations.  Chinook Mall has also been referred to as CF Chinook Centre with the CF representing Cadillac Fairview, the Canadian commercial real estate investor which owns, operates and manages the mall and provides a great shopping experience to visitors

The cultural significance of the name "Chinook" was chosen for the mall to reflect the local climate and cultural identity. The Chinook winds are well known in the city of Calgary for their ability to melt snow and bring warmth to the region, even in the depths of winter. This natural phenomenon is symbolic of the warmth and vibrancy the mall aims to offer its visitors and the experience they have while at the centre.

History

Opening: Originally opened in 1960, Chinook Centre has undergone multiple expansions and renovations over the years to become the extensive shopping complex it is today.

Development: The mall has grown significantly since its inception, with major renovations completed in 2000 and 2010. Even with the increase in online shopping, the mall updates, which include additional retail spaces, a food court, and luxury boutiques, continue to serve visitors with a premier shopping destination.

Size and Layout

Area: Chinook Centre spans approximately 1.4 million square feet, making it the largest mall in Calgary. Compare this to Ikea Calgary at 357,000 square feet or West Edmonton Mall at 5.3 million square feet.  A great place to get those steps in during the winter months. Levels: The mall features three levels of retail shopping, along with underground and above ground parking. The parking is free.

Parking: There are over 5,500 parking spaces available, including 3 covered parkades and surface lots as well. Valet parking services.  This is a decent number of parking spaces considering West Edmonton Mall has 20,000 parking spaces. 

Retail and Dining

Stores: Chinook Centre houses over 250 stores, including high end retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, popular brands such as Apple, Lululemon, and H&M, and Canadian owned department stores like Hudson’s Bay.

Dining: The mall offers a diverse selection of dining options, ranging from fast food to sit down restaurants. The food court includes popular chains like Chipotle and A&W, while the upper levels feature more upscale dining experiences such as The Keg, Joey and Boston Pizza.

Luxury Wing: The 2010 expansion introduced a luxury wing featuring brands like Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Company, and Burberry, catering to a high end customers.

Entertainment

Scotiabank Theatre Chinook: This multiplex cinema is a major attraction, offering the latest blockbuster films, the best buttered popcorn to ever exist, IMAX screenings, and a VIP section with more luxurious seating options, leather reclining seats with drink holders. The theater also has an arcade for pre or post movie game play. Movie tickets can be purchased at a kiosk or at a register.  Parking can be found underground, near the front entrance of Cineplex and plenty of parking at the rear side of the back entrance.

Bowling Alley: The Chinook Bowladrome is Calgary's largest, 5 pin bowling alley.  Located near the basement of Hudson's Bay and open to public bowling, as well as league play.

Guest Services: Chinook Centre offers a range of services, including concierge, strollers and wheelchairs, and gift card purchases. Visit them for store information or any general inquiries. Cadillac Fairview gift cards, redeemable at any store in Chinook Mall, can be purchased here.

Children’s Play Area: A designated play area for children is available if you want to spend a day at the mall and allow the kids some time to be social and expend some of their energy. This is especially welcome in the winter when it is too cold to be at the playground.

Events: The mall regularly hosts seasonal events, promotions, and sales, particularly during the holiday season, making it a lively spot for community engagement. The holiday season decorating is a sight to see and adds to the joy of the season.

Cell Phone Usage: Public Wifi - Chinook Mall offers FREE public WiFi as a courtesy to its guests. To access, enable WiFi on your mobile device and search for CF PUBLIC WIFI.                                                 

Sensory Backpacks: Mobile charging areas for guests are located at the tall tables on the south side of the Dining Hall where you will find both regular outlets and USB charging slots.  A second charging area is also located near the eating area outside of the Marble Slab Creamery.

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

You can charge your vehicle while you shop at Chinook Mall There are 6 Flo EV Charging Stations at a charge rate of $1.25 per hour. All 6 Flo Chargers are located in the North Parkade, Level 1 near Macloed Trail entrance.

Public Transit: Chinook Mall is well served by Calgary Transit, with the Chinook C Train station located nearby, providing easy access for shoppers who use public transport.

Parking: The mall has ample parking with multiple entry points, making it accessible for shoppers from various parts of the city.

Wheelchairs: Chinook Mall has a wheelchair loan program to assist shoppers who may need the extra support.  Needed to borrow a wheelchair, is a Passport, Driver's License or Permanent Resident card and a $40 cash deposit (returned to you when chair is returned in condition it was received in). Chinook mall Walkers Program -  a walking program called “Chinook Walkers,” designed to provide a safe and climate controlled environment for people to stay active throughout the seasons. Here is what you need to know:

Hours: The mall usually opens its doors for walkers around 7:30 AM, with the official mall opening for retail activities at 10:00 AM. These hours may vary, so it's advisable to check with the mall for current times.

Days: The program generally runs from Monday to Saturday, with some malls also offering walking hours on Sunday.

Health and Fitness: Walking indoors provides a low-impact exercise option that is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels. It’s particularly beneficial for seniors or those recovering from injuries.

Distance: The walking routes inside Chinook Centre can vary, with a complete lap around the mall offering a substantial distance to cover. Depending on the route, you can walk up to 1-2 kilometers per lap.
