A Brief History of Rocky View County
The history of Rocky View County is deeply rooted in Alberta’s early days of settlement and governance. Initially part of the North-West Territories, Alberta became a distinct district in 1882, eventually achieving provincial status in 1905. In 1912, the Rural Municipality Act brought self-governance to rural areas, allowing communities to develop infrastructure and manage resources more effectively.
By the 1940s, Alberta’s rural districts underwent significant restructuring to stabilize local economies during challenging times, leading to the formation of larger municipal districts. In 1955, the Municipal District of Calgary No. 44 was established, encompassing many smaller communities and school districts. However, the name was met with disapproval. A naming contest among local school children resulted in the suggestion “Rocky View,” submitted by Leslie Burwash of Balzac. This name officially took effect on January 1, 1956, marking the birth of the Municipal District of Rocky View No. 44.
In 2009, the municipality was renamed Rocky View County, reflecting its dynamic growth and modern identity. Today, the county embraces its historical roots while looking forward to continued progress and community development.
