Homes For Sale In Okotoks
Okotoks Features
Okotoks is known for its well established neighborhoods featuring beautiful single family homes. These homes often come with large yards, mature trees, and proximity to parks and schools, making them ideal for families with young ones. Many of the newer developments also custom built home designs with modern, high end finishes. Okotoks has a rich history that dates back to its early Indigenous inhabitants, the Blackfoot people, who lived in the region for thousands of years. The name "Okotoks" comes from the Blackfoot word "Okotok," meaning "rock," referring to the large glacial erratic known as the Okotoks Erratic. The Indigenous importance and cultural significance of the erratic is considered a sacred landmark and a symbol of the Blackfoot people's deep connection to the land.
European settlers arrived in the late 19th century, and the area began to develop as a cattle ranching and farming community. The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883 was a significant factor in the town's growth, facilitating trade and transportation. Okotoks was officially incorporated as a village in 1904 and later became a town in 1967. Throughout the 20th century, the town evolved from a small rural community into a growing suburban area, with its population increasing as it attracted residents from Calgary and beyond.
Today, Okotoks is known for its picturesque setting, vibrant community life, and strong commitment to preserving its natural heritage and historical roots while embracing modern development.
About "Big Rock"
Size and Composition: The Okotoks Erratic is a massive boulder, measuring approximately 40 meters (130 feet) long, 18 meters (60 feet) wide, and 8 meters (26 feet) high. It weighs an estimated 16,000 tons. The rock is composed of quartzite, a type of metamorphic rock that is highly resistant to weathering.
Geological Origin: The boulder was transported by glacial movement during the last Ice Age, around 12,000 to 14,000 years ago. As the Laurentide Ice Sheet advanced and retreated, it carried the boulder from its source in the Rocky Mountains and deposited it in the plains near Okotoks where it remains today.
Preservation: "Big Rock" is protected as a natural heritage site, ensuring its preservation for future generations for educational purposes and the general appreciation of its historical significance.
