Garage Fire Safety in Calgary: Fuel, Tools and Hazardous Materials

For many Calgary homeowners, the garage is doing a lot more than parking a vehicle.

It is a workshop, storage room, charging station, mechanical room, recycling depot and home base for lawn equipment, snowblowers, tools, paint, fuel and everything else we do not want taking up space inside the house.

That is also what makes garages a serious fire risk.

Gasoline, propane, batteries, electrical equipment, solvents, vehicles and combustible materials are often stored within a few feet of one another. When something goes wrong, a small fire can grow quickly and, in an attached garage, spread into the home.

The good news is that most garage fire hazards are preventable. You do…

Calgary's Concrete Chronicles: Calgary Courts Centre

Some buildings define a city's skyline. Others quietly keep the city running.

The Calgary Courts Centre is one of those buildings.

Every day, thousands of people walk through its doors. Some are reporting for jury duty. Others are appearing in court, meeting with lawyers, filing legal documents, or attending hearings that could change the course of their lives. For most visitors, it's not a place they planned to spend their day—but it's a building every city depends on.

As someone with a background in construction, I see something else. Behind the glass and limestone is one of Calgary's most impressive reinforced concrete structures, engineered to perform for generations. That's exactly…

June 2026 Calgary Real Estate Statistics Recap

Calgary’s housing market showed signs of improvement in June, with 2,197 sales recorded across the city. While this represented a monthly increase, sales were nearly 4% lower than last year and remained below long-term averages. The slowdown continued to be driven by apartment-style homes, where rising inventory has softened demand. In contrast, the highest price ranges and the most affordable segments saw year-over-year sales gains.

“The easing of demand for resale homes isn’t unexpected given slower migration, which has reduced both rental and homeownership demand for higher-density housing,” said Ann-Marie Lurie, Chief Economist at…

Calgary Farmers' Markets: Where Fresh Food Meets Community

Calgary's farmers' markets have become much more than places to buy fresh produce. They're gathering places where local farmers, artisans, bakers, and small businesses connect directly with the communities they serve.

For many Calgarians, a trip to the farmers' market has become part of the weekend routine. Whether you're picking up vegetables grown just outside the city, fresh baking, locally raised meats, or handcrafted products, these markets offer a closer connection to the people and places that help shape Alberta's food culture.

For homebuyers, they're also another example of the lifestyle different Calgary communities offer. Living close to a year-round market, seasonal…

May 2026 Calgary Real Estate Statistics Recap

Inventory levels continued to build in May, reaching 6,752 units, keeping supply above historical norms. While inventory is in line with last year's levels, gains remain concentrated in the apartment and row-home segments. Detached homes continue to face tighter conditions, with inventory sitting below both last year's levels and long-term averages.

"The shift in supply is being felt across the market," said Ann-Marie Lurie, Chief Economist at CREB®. "More choice in the new home and rental markets has created additional competition, while affordability concerns and slower migration have reduced urgency among buyers. As a result,…

Living in Mahogany: The Lifestyle Tradeoff Behind Calgary’s Most In-Demand Lake Community

Mahogany is the kind of community Calgary keeps building more of - large-scale, master-planned, amenity-rich, and unapologetically suburban, but it’s one of the few in the southeast that has developed a genuine identity rather than just another postal code.

That identity comes from the lake.

The 63-acre freshwater lake at the centre of the community isn’t just a marketing feature. It shapes how residents spend summer evenings, weekends, winters, and everyday life within the neighbourhood itself. In Mahogany, the lake is not decorative infrastructure. It’s the organizing principle of the community.

And that’s really the tradeoff buyers are making when…

Why Calgary Homeowners Are Investing in Backyard Living Instead of Moving

What if the most-used room in your house wasn’t actually inside your house?

In 2026, Calgary backyards are doing a lot more than hosting the occasional BBQ. Detached offices, creator studios, golf simulators, saunas, fitness spaces, and full outdoor kitchens are showing up across the city as homeowners look for smarter ways to make their properties work harder.

And let’s be honest — everyone suddenly wants a backyard pizza kitchen.

Outdoor cooking has gone from “guy with a BBQ” to restaurant-style setups with pizza ovens, prep stations, covered dining areas, fireplaces, and built-in refrigeration. Somewhere along the way, Calgary homeowners collectively decided they…

Calgary Is Asking Residents How Builders Should Communicate Small-Scale Housing Projects

The City of Calgary is currently gathering feedback on how builders and developers should communicate with residents before certain small-scale housing projects are formally submitted.

And let’s clear up the biggest misunderstanding right away: this is not about giving neighbours veto power over redevelopment projects.

This is about something much more practical.

Should residents receive clearer information, better communication, and a chance to ask real questions earlier in the process when small-scale housing is being proposed in their community?

April 2026 Calgary Real Estate Statistics Recap

Calgary’s housing market followed typical spring patterns in April, with both sales and inventory increasing compared to March. Despite this seasonal lift, sales reached 2,104 units, down 6% from April 2025, reflecting a market that continues to normalize after several years of elevated demand.

“Sales were expected to ease as the market moves away from the surge driven by rapid migration in recent years,” said Ann-Marie Lurie, Chief Economist at CREB®. “Improved supply across all housing types has reduced urgency among buyers, helping shift conditions toward balance. That said, detached homes still face limited supply, while…
